A jewellery photo can show colour and shape, but it cannot tell you everything about materials, fit or the seller. Before ordering, use this checklist to understand what you are buying and keep a record of the details that matter to you.

Start with the exact product description

Choose the design first, then read the specifications. Look for the base metal, finish, stone description, dimensions and fastening. If a detail is missing, ask before ordering rather than assuming it from the photograph or price.

Separate gold plating from solid gold

Gold plating describes a gold layer over another material. An 18K gold-plated brass piece has a brass base; it is not solid 18K gold. Gold-tone describes appearance and does not, by itself, establish the material. The FTC's jewellery buying guide explains common precious-metal terms.

Ask for evidence of any certification claim

A sample certificate graphic is not documentation for the item in your basket. If a seller makes a specific claim about a hallmark, grading report or certification, ask what documentation applies to that particular piece. Requirements differ by country and product category. This guide does not claim that all Auricka jewellery is hallmarked or laboratory certified.

Compare like with like

Compare pieces by the information in their listings: materials, construction, dimensions and design. A decorative plated accessory and a solid precious-metal jewel are different purchases. An attractive photograph or discount does not establish the metal content or resale value of a piece.

Check size and how it will sit

For necklaces, compare the stated length with a chain you already own. For earrings, check the drop, width and fastening where supplied. For rings and bangles, use the specific size information on that listing. A close-up photograph can make a small detail look much larger than it is.

Blue teardrop crystal pendant on a gold-tone chain necklace worn with an open blue shirtBlue Crystal Pendant Necklace – Adjustable. See the listing for current materials, dimensions and availability.

Look at more than one image

Use front, side, fastening and worn views when available. Notice how a necklace sits against a neckline and whether an earring's visible shape fits the look you want. Lighting and screens can affect colour. Ask for clarification when the image and written description appear inconsistent.

Triple pearl wrap ring with open gold-tone bands worn on a handTriple Pearl Open Wrap Ring – Adjustable. See the listing for current materials, dimensions and availability.

Read reviews and seller information carefully

Look for specific descriptions of the item and service rather than relying on a star score alone. Check who operates the store and how to contact them. The FTC's online shopping advice recommends researching sellers and reading terms before buying. HTTPS encrypts a connection; it does not establish that a business or its claims are trustworthy.
