Gem symbolism has a long history, but today's month-by-month lists are not one unchanged ancient system. Jewelers of America traces the standardised American list to 1912. Lists and alternatives differ between traditions and organisations.

Tradition and personal meaning can coexist

You can choose the stone associated with a birthday, or a colour connected to a person, outfit or memory. A gift does not have to follow a calendar to feel considered. Explain your connection in a note rather than promising an effect on health, emotions or luck.

Keep the story separate from the material

A red accent can recall a July birthday without being ruby. Clear crystal and cubic zirconia are different from diamond, and zircon is a different material from cubic zirconia. Read the exact product specification rather than identifying a stone from colour alone.

Pearl, mother-of-pearl and imitation pearl also describe different materials. Ask about any origin, treatment or cultivation detail that matters to the recipient; a white colour or irregular outline does not establish those facts.
